A Prophet (2009)

Overview

Sentenced to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena is alone in the world and can neither read nor write. On his arrival at the prison, he seems younger and more brittle than the others detained there. At once he falls under the sway of a group of Corsicans who enforce their rule in the prison. As the 'missions' go by, he toughens himself and wins the confidence of the Corsican group.

Detailed Bias Analysis

Analyzing...
Leans Progressive

Primary

The film leans left by depicting the dehumanizing and corrupt nature of the prison system and the marginalization of ethnic minorities, aligning with progressive critiques of systemic issues. However, its narrative focuses on an individual's pragmatic and amoral ascent within this system rather than advocating for explicit progressive solutions.

The movie features a cast that naturally reflects the diverse ethnic and social composition of a French prison and its criminal underworld, with a North African protagonist. The narrative primarily explores themes of survival, power, and the criminal justice system, without explicitly critiquing traditional identities or centering DEI themes.

Secondary

Islam is portrayed with nuance and respect, particularly through Malik's journey of self-discovery and his connection to the Arab community. It depicts community solidarity, cultural identity, and a spiritual dimension, without linking criminal activities to the faith itself.

The film 'A Prophet' does not feature any identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or themes. The narrative is centered on a young man's survival and ascent within a harsh prison environment and organized crime, without exploring aspects of queer identity.

A Prophet is a prison drama centered on Malik El Djebena's journey through the French penal system. The film does not feature any identifiable transsexual characters or themes, focusing instead on gang dynamics, power struggles, and the protagonist's personal development within a harsh environment.

The movie does not contain any action or adventure elements.

A Prophet is an original screenplay, not an adaptation of existing source material or a biopic. All characters were created specifically for this film, meaning there are no pre-established characters whose gender could have been altered.

A Prophet is an original film with characters created specifically for this production. There are no pre-existing canonical or historical character baselines from which a race swap could occur.
