Top Five (2014)

Top Five poster

Top Five (2014)

Overview

Though he began in stand-up comedy, Andre Allen hit the big-time as the star of a trilogy of action-comedies about a talking bear but now he wants to be taken seriously. His passion project about the Haitian Revolution, a movie called Uprize, was panned by the NY Times film critic. A couple days before the wedding to his reality star fiancée, he's forced to spend the day with Chelsea Brown, a profile writer for the New York Times. Unexpectedly, he opens up to her, and as they wind their way across New York, he tries to get back in touch with his comedic roots.

Detailed Bias Analysis

Analyzing...
Center

Primary

The film's central focus on an individual's journey of self-discovery, authenticity, and personal relationships, rather than promoting a specific political ideology or addressing a societal problem with a partisan solution, leads to a neutral rating.

The movie features a diverse, predominantly Black cast, which is integral to its narrative about a Black comedian's life and career. The story explores personal and professional challenges without explicitly critiquing traditional identities or centering DEI themes as a primary narrative driver.

Secondary

The film features a trans woman stripper whose identity is presented as a shocking revelation, primarily serving as a source of discomfort and jokes for the cisgender male characters. This portrayal reinforces negative stereotypes and lacks any positive or affirming elements, contributing to a problematic depiction.

The film portrays Christianity through Erica Long as a source of moral strength, integrity, and genuine love. Her faith is depicted with respect and nuance, contrasting Andre's initial cynicism and ultimately earning his admiration.

The film 'Top Five' does not feature any identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or themes. Its narrative is centered on the heterosexual relationships and career struggles of its protagonists, resulting in no direct portrayal of queer identity.

The movie does not contain any action or adventure elements.

Top Five is an original film with characters created specifically for this production. There are no pre-existing source materials, historical figures, or legacy characters from prior installments whose gender could have been swapped.

Top Five is an original film with no prior source material, historical figures, or previous adaptations. All characters were created for this specific movie, thus there are no established racial baselines to compare against for a race swap.
