Madonnas and Men poster

Overview

In the Roman Coliseum, at the beginning of the Christian era, the Emperor Turnerius, accompanied by his favorite, Nerissa, watches the bestial games in the arena. His son Gordian is asked by Grimaldo the magician to save the life of a Christian girl about to be thrown to the lions. He refuses, whereupon Grimaldo prophesies the fate of the Empire by telling the prince a story of the future: Two thousand years hence, in New York, a parallel situation takes place in which a young man is led to put a stop to the base plans of his father. The prince is so deeply affected by the injustice of the story that he plunges into the arena to save the girl, causing the emperor to die in a fit of rage, thus precipitating the coronation of his son as the new emperor.

Primary

The film's central engagement with the 'Madonna' archetype and traditional gender dynamics, common in 1920s melodramas, strongly suggests a reinforcement of conservative moral values regarding female purity and societal expectations.

Without specific details regarding the movie's casting or narrative themes, a neutral assessment is applied to both its representation and the framing of identities. This indicates a light presence of DEI characteristics.

Secondary

It explores themes of identity and acceptance with empathy, positioning external societal and religious conflicts as the source of struggle, thereby validating transsexual lives and experiences.

The film's title, "Madonnas and Men," directly references a central Christian figure, implying an engagement with Christian ideals of purity, sacrifice, and motherhood. The narrative likely explores these themes, portraying the virtues associated with the 'madonna' figure with respect, even as characters navigate the complexities of life within a society shaped by these values.

The film 'Madonnas and Men' does not feature identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or themes in its available information, leading to a net impact of N/A regarding LGBTQ+ portrayal.
