The film's central conflict revolves around anti-colonialism and the struggle for national self-determination against an oppressive foreign power, aligning its dominant themes with progressive values.

The movie features a cast primarily composed of Korean and Japanese actors, consistent with its South Korean origin and alternate history setting, without engaging in explicit race or gender swaps of traditionally white roles. Its narrative centers on themes of national identity, historical revisionism, and resistance against a dominant power structure, which, while challenging established norms, does not explicitly critique traditional Western identities such as white or male.
