Home and Away (1988)

Overview

Home and Away is set in the fictional town of Summer Bay, a coastal town in New South Wales, and follows the personal and professional lives of the people living in the area. The show initially focused on the Fletcher family, Pippa and Tom Fletcher and their five foster children Frank Morgan, Carly Morris, Steven Matheson, Lynn Davenport and Sally Keating, who would go on to become one of the show's longest-running characters. The show also originally and currently focuses on the Stewart family. Home and Away had proved popular when it premiered in 1988 and had risen to become a hit in Australia, and after only a few weeks, the show tackled its first major and disturbing storyline, the rape of Carly Morris; it was one of the first shows to feature such storylines during the early timeslot. H&A has tackled many adult-themed and controversial storylines; something rarely found in its restricted timeslot.

Primary

The film maintains a neutral stance by focusing on human relationships and community dynamics, addressing social issues through individual character arcs and promoting solutions rooted in personal growth and interpersonal support rather than explicit political ideologies.

Due to the absence of specific details regarding the casting, character diversity, narrative, or thematic framing of 'Home and Away', a neutral assessment was applied for both representation and narrative elements. This approach assumes a general level of diversity without explicit DEI-driven casting or strong narrative critiques, resulting in an overall classification of light DEI presence.

Secondary

Home and Away has consistently introduced LGBTQ+ characters and storylines, particularly in recent years. These portrayals generally depict characters with dignity and complexity, exploring their relationships and personal journeys in an empathetic and supportive manner, leading to a net positive impact.

As a long-running mainstream soap opera, 'Home and Away' generally portrays Christianity with respect. While individual characters may have varied experiences, the overall narrative often depicts Christian faith and community as a source of comfort, moral guidance, and social cohesion, aligning with positive societal values.

Home and Away (1988) does not feature any identifiable transsexual characters or themes within its narrative, particularly in its early years or as a general overarching theme.

The movie does not contain any action or adventure elements.

Home and Away is an original, long-running soap opera. Its characters are created within the show's own canon, and there is no evidence of a character established in earlier installments being portrayed as a different gender in later ones, nor is it an adaptation of external source material with gender-swapped characters.

Home and Away is an original, long-running soap opera, not an adaptation of pre-existing material. Characters are created within the show's own canon. There are no known instances of a character, once established as a specific race within the series, being subsequently portrayed by an actor of a different race.
