Land of the Lustrous (2017)
In the mysterious future, crystalline organisms called Gems inhabit a world that has been destroyed by six meteors. Each Gem is assigned a role in order to fight against the Lunarians, a species who attacks them in order to shatter their bodies and use them as decorations. Phosphophyllite, also known as Phos, is a young and fragile Gem who dreams of helping their friends in the war effort. Instead, they are told to compile an encyclopedia because of their delicate condition. After begrudgingly embarking on this task, Phos meets Cinnabar, an intelligent gem who has been relegated to patrolling the isolated island at night because of the corrosive poison their body creates. After seeing how unhappy Cinnabar is, Phos decides to find a role that both of the rejected Gems can enjoy. Can Phos's seemingly mundane assignment lead both Phos and Cinnabar to the fulfillment they desire?

The film's central narrative champions questioning established authority and seeking transformative truth to resolve a systemic problem, rather than upholding tradition or finding individual solutions within the existing framework. This thematic approach aligns with left-leaning values.
The movie features a cast of genderless, non-human gemstone characters, which inherently sidesteps traditional human racial and gender representation. The narrative focuses on their unique existence and struggles, without engaging in explicit critiques or portrayals of human traditional identities.
The film features a cast of entirely genderless sentient beings whose identities and relationships are central to the narrative. Their non-gendered existence is depicted with dignity and complexity, exploring their struggles and growth without their identity being a source of negativity or ridicule. This creates a largely affirming portrayal of non-binary existence.
The film heavily draws upon Buddhist themes through the character of Kongo-sensei, a monk-like figure, and the Lunarians' desire for 'purification' and release from suffering. The narrative treats these concepts with reverence, portraying Kongo as a benevolent spiritual guide and the Lunarians' plight with sympathy, aligning with the dignity of Buddhist principles.
The film does not feature identifiable transsexual characters or themes. Its protagonists are genderless gem beings whose unique existence and struggles are explored without engaging with concepts of human gender identity or transition, thus rendering the rubric's criteria inapplicable.
The primary characters in "Land of the Lustrous" are immortal, genderless gem-beings who engage in physical combat against humanoid adversaries. As there are no female characters present in the series, the criteria for a female character defeating male opponents cannot be met.
The characters in Land of the Lustrous are sentient gem beings who are consistently portrayed as genderless or non-binary in both the original manga and the anime adaptation. There is no instance of a character established as one gender in the source material being portrayed as a different gender on screen.
The characters in Land of the Lustrous are sentient gem-based lifeforms, not humans. As such, they do not possess human racial characteristics, and the concept of a 'race swap' does not apply to them.
