Overview

Kundun follows the fourteenth Dalai Lama from his identification as a child through his forced exile after China's invasion of Tibet. Martin Scorsese frames the story around non-violent resistance against an occupying power, which pulls the film toward progressive territory on the political axis. The depiction of Tibetan Buddhism is warm and respectful, and family life inside the film is hierarchical, devotional, and traditional. Those elements moderate the label without reversing it. The dominant signal is still the anti-colonial framing: an indigenous spiritual leader defending his people against a state that denies their legitimacy. That combination of human-rights focus and sympathetic religion lands the film at Leans Progressive.
