Overview

Maggie's Plan is a New York romantic comedy about a woman who engineers her own path to single motherhood, falls for a married professor, and then spends the back half of the movie trying to return him to his ex-wife. Directed by Rebecca Miller and led by Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, and Julianne Moore, the film is clearly comfortable with divorce, fluid family arrangements, and women steering their romantic lives with spreadsheet precision. The Leans Traditional label is a mild surprise, but it holds: the story keeps circling back to stable pair bonds and the limits of solo planning. Maggie's schemes, despite their progressive trappings, keep landing her closer to conventional partnership than she intended.
