The Change-Up (2011)

Overview

Lifelong friends Dave and Mitch are envious of the other's life. Mitch thinks Dave has it all: a beautiful, loving family and a high-paying job at a prestigious law firm. But Dave thinks Mitch’s stress-free playboy life without obligation or consequence is the real dream come true. One fateful drunken night, they both admit that they wish they had the other’s life while peeing in a fountain when lightning strikes. The next morning, they wake up, hungover, in each other’s bodies! With time not on their side, Mitch and Dave comically struggle to avoid completely destroying each other’s lives before they can find a way to get their old ones back.

Detailed Bias Analysis

Analyzing...
Traditional

Primary

The film's central narrative focuses on personal growth, empathy, and the appreciation of one's own life and responsibilities, which are largely apolitical and universal themes. It does not explicitly promote a specific political ideology, instead focusing on individual transformation and relational dynamics.

The movie features a predominantly white cast with no explicit race or gender swaps of traditional roles. Its narrative centers on the experiences of two white, heterosexual males, framing traditional identities neutrally or positively without incorporating explicit DEI themes.

Secondary

The film features a brief scene with a gay couple, which serves as a setup for a homophobic joke delivered by a main character. This joke is presented for comedic effect without narrative critique, resulting in a problematic portrayal that contributes to ridicule rather than respectful representation.

The Change-Up is a body-swap comedy centered on two heterosexual male friends. The film's plot, characters, and comedic elements do not involve any identifiable transsexual individuals or themes. The narrative does not address or portray transgender identity in any capacity, resulting in no net impact.

The movie does not contain any action or adventure elements.

The Change-Up is an original film from 2011, not an adaptation of pre-existing material or a biopic. All characters were created specifically for this movie, meaning there are no established characters from source material, previous installments, or history whose gender could have been changed.

The Change-Up is an original film with characters created specifically for this movie. There is no prior source material, historical basis, or previous adaptations from which character races could have been established and subsequently changed.
