Overview

Delicatessen is a darkly comic French dystopia from directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, set in a crumbling apartment building where the butcher's menu has taken a troubling turn. A new handyman arrives, falls for the butcher's daughter, and discovers that tenant turnover is more than a figure of speech. The Leans Progressive label follows from the film's core concerns: the story frames its ruling figure as a predatory exploiter, positions collective resistance as the moral path forward, and treats traditional family authority as corrupt rather than protective. These are recognizably progressive instincts, even wrapped in surrealist French absurdism. The lack of explicit identity politics keeps the label mild rather than strongly ideological.
