Ella Enchanted (2004)

Ella Enchanted (2004)

Overview

Ella lives in a magical world in which each child, at the moment of their birth, is given a virtuous "gift" from a fairy godmother. Ella's so-called gift, however, is obedience. This birthright proves itself to be quite the curse once Ella finds herself in the hands of several unscrupulous characters whom she quite literally cannot disobey. Determined to gain control of her life and decisions, Ella sets off on a journey to find her fairy godmother who she hopes will lift the curse. The path, however, isn't easy -- Ella must outwit a slew of unpleasant obstacles including ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, elves and Prince Charmont's evil uncle, who wants to take over the crown and rule the kingdom.

Detailed Bias Analysis

Analyzing...
Leans Progressive

Primary

The film's central narrative critiques systemic oppression and advocates for individual free will and social equality, aligning its dominant themes with progressive values. The solution involves challenging the established unjust order to achieve greater justice and freedom for all.

The movie features visible diversity within its supporting cast, incorporating actors from various racial backgrounds in key roles. Its narrative, while satirizing traditional fairy tale tropes and promoting themes of self-empowerment, does not explicitly critique traditional identities or center DEI themes in its core plot.

Secondary

Ella Enchanted does not feature any identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or themes within its narrative. The story focuses on traditional heterosexual relationships and fantasy elements, resulting in no portrayal of LGBTQ+ identities.

Ella Enchanted does not feature any identifiable transsexual characters or themes. The story is a fantasy-comedy centered on a young woman's magical curse and her journey to overcome it, with no elements pertaining to gender identity.

The movie does not contain any action or adventure elements.

The film is an adaptation of Gail Carson Levine's novel. All major characters, including Ella, Prince Char, and the stepfamily, retain their established genders from the source material. No character canonically established as one gender in the novel is portrayed as a different gender in the film.

The film adapts a novel where character races were not explicitly defined or visually established. Therefore, the casting of actors of various races for characters like Lucinda, who had no prior specified race, does not constitute a race swap under the given definition.
