Ella Enchanted (2004)

Ella Enchanted (2004)

Overview

Ella lives in a magical world in which each child, at the moment of their birth, is given a virtuous "gift" from a fairy godmother. Ella's so-called gift, however, is obedience. This birthright proves itself to be quite the curse once Ella finds herself in the hands of several unscrupulous characters whom she quite literally cannot disobey. Determined to gain control of her life and decisions, Ella sets off on a journey to find her fairy godmother who she hopes will lift the curse. The path, however, isn't easy -- Ella must outwit a slew of unpleasant obstacles including ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, elves and Prince Charmont's evil uncle, who wants to take over the crown and rule the kingdom.

Detailed Bias Analysis

Analyzing...
Leans Progressive

Primary

The film's central narrative critiques tyranny and systemic oppression, championing individual liberation and the unity of diverse groups against unjust power structures, aligning with progressive values.

The movie features visible diversity within its supporting cast, including actors of color in significant roles. Its narrative primarily explores themes of self-determination and breaking free from an oppressive magical curse, without explicitly critiquing traditional identities or centering DEI themes in its core message.

Secondary

Ella Enchanted does not feature any identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or themes within its narrative. The story focuses on traditional heterosexual relationships and fantasy elements, resulting in no portrayal of LGBTQ+ identities.

Ella Enchanted does not feature any identifiable transsexual characters or themes. The story is a fantasy-comedy centered on a young woman's magical curse and her journey to overcome it, with no elements pertaining to gender identity.

The movie does not contain any action or adventure elements.

The film is an adaptation of a novel and the Cinderella fairy tale. All major characters, including Ella, Prince Charmont, and the stepfamily, maintain their established genders from the source material and traditional lore.

The film adapts a novel where character races were not explicitly specified or visually depicted. While some characters are portrayed by actors of different races than might be implicitly assumed, no character's race was canonically established in the source material to constitute a race swap.
