Thumbelina (1992)

Thumbelina poster

Thumbelina (1992)

Overview

The dam where Thumbelina and her father live is breaking due to the rising waters in the nearby pond. Father worries that when spring comes, the melting snows will rise the water higher than ever causing the dam to crack and water to flow over the meadow, thus drowning the little people who live there. Father believes he is too old to take on the journey to find the prince and warn him and his people, so he asks his daughter to go instead. Thumbelina agrees, but in her journey she mets a great deal of characters, both good and evil. To someone not bigger than a human's thumb, dealing with the evil intentions of Mona, a greedy mouse, will prove to be a big challenge.

Primary

The film focuses on universal themes of love, belonging, and individual perseverance within a fantasy setting, without explicitly promoting or critiquing any specific political ideology. Its narrative centers on a personal journey culminating in a traditional romantic resolution, rather than a political one.

The animated film 'Thumbelina' adheres to traditional fairy tale aesthetics and narrative structures. Its character representation and story framing do not incorporate explicit DEI elements, focusing instead on classic themes of love and self-discovery without critiquing traditional identities.

Secondary

The character of the toad, a primary antagonist in the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale who abducts Thumbelina, is portrayed as Mrs. Toad, a female character, in the 1992 film adaptation. This constitutes a gender swap.

The film "Thumbelina" does not feature any identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or themes. The narrative focuses on the titular character's journey to find love and belonging, adhering to traditional fairy tale tropes without incorporating queer identities or relationships.

The animated film "Thumbelina" does not feature any identifiable transsexual characters or themes. The narrative centers on a traditional fairy tale romance and adventure, with all characters portrayed within conventional gender expressions, resulting in no depiction relevant to transsexual identity.

The film is an animated musical fantasy where the protagonist, Thumbelina, is a small and vulnerable character. Her challenges are overcome through escape, the help of others, or cleverness, rather than direct physical confrontation. No female characters engage in or win close-quarters physical combat against male opponents.

The 1992 animated film "Thumbelina" adapts the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. Its characters, including Thumbelina and Prince Cornelius, are depicted consistent with their traditional European fairy tale origins, without any instances of a character's race being changed from established canon.
