Hollywood Squares (1966)

Hollywood Squares (1966)

Overview

Hollywood Squares is an American panel game show, in which two contestants play tic-tac-toe to win cash and prizes. The "board" for the game is a 3 × 3 vertical stack of open-faced cubes, each occupied by a celebrity seated at a desk and facing the contestants. The stars are asked questions by the host, or "Square-Master", and the contestants judge the veracity of their answers in order to win the game. Although Hollywood Squares was a legitimate game show, the game largely acted as the background for the show's comedy in the form of joke answers, often given by the stars prior to their "real" answer. The show's writers usually supplied the jokes. In addition, the stars were given question subjects and plausible incorrect answers prior to the show. The show was scripted in this sense, but the gameplay was not. In any case, as host Peter Marshall, the best-known "Square-Master" and the man in whose honor the show's first announcer, Kenny Williams, actually "coined" the term, would explain at the beginning of the Secret Square game, the celebrities were briefed prior to show to help them with bluff answers, but they otherwise heard the actual questions for the first time as they were asked on air.

Primary

Hollywood Squares is a game show primarily focused on light entertainment, celebrity interaction, and trivia. Its content is inherently apolitical, offering no discernible promotion or critique of any specific political ideology, thus earning a neutral rating.

This game show primarily featured mainstream celebrities of its time, without explicit DEI-driven casting or intentional race/gender swaps. Its format as a quiz show means it lacks a narrative to critique or frame traditional identities, maintaining a neutral and entertainment-focused presentation.

Secondary

Hollywood Squares featured prominent gay-coded celebrities like Paul Lynde, whose humor often utilized double entendres related to their perceived sexuality. While the show provided a mainstream platform for these individuals to be celebrated for their wit and persona, it did not explicitly address or affirm LGBTQ+ identity. The portrayal is considered neutral as it neither strongly uplifts nor denigrates, but rather incorporates gay-coded elements as part of a celebrity's comedic appeal within a game show format.

Hollywood Squares (1966) is a game show format that does not include narrative elements, characters, or thematic content related to transsexual individuals. Consequently, there is no portrayal of transsexual characters or themes within the show's scope, resulting in an N/A rating.

The movie does not contain any action or adventure elements.

Hollywood Squares is a game show featuring real-life celebrity panelists, not fictional characters with established canonical genders. The concept of a 'gender swap' as defined does not apply to its format or participants.

Hollywood Squares is a game show featuring various celebrity panelists, not a narrative production with fixed characters from source material or prior installments. The concept of a 'race swap' does not apply to its format.
