Belle and Sebastian: Next Generation (2022)

Overview

10-year-old Sebastien reluctantly spends his vacation in the mountains with his grandmother and aunt. Helping them with the sheep is hardly an exciting prospect for a city boy like him - but that is without considering his encounter with Belle, a huge dog mistreated by her owner. Ready to do anything to fight injustice and to protect his new-found friend, Sebastien will spend the craziest summer of his life.

Primary

The film is a coming-of-age adventure centered on a boy's bond with a dog, focusing on apolitical themes of personal growth, responsibility, and the natural world, without explicitly promoting a specific political ideology.

The film features a significant departure from traditional casting by explicitly recasting the lead role of Sebastian, historically portrayed as white, with a Black actor. The narrative, however, does not appear to center on explicit critiques of traditional identities, maintaining a neutral stance in its storytelling.

Secondary

The character of Sebastian, who was consistently depicted as a white boy in the original novel, anime, and previous film adaptations, is portrayed by a Black actor in this 2022 film.

The film 'Belle and Sebastian: Next Generation' does not include any discernible LGBTQ+ characters or themes. Its narrative focuses on a young boy's adventure with a dog in the mountains, without incorporating elements related to queer identity.

The film 'Belle and Sebastian: Next Generation' does not include any identifiable transsexual characters or themes within its narrative. Consequently, there is no specific portrayal of trans identity to assess, resulting in a determination of N/A for its net impact.

The film is a family adventure story focused on a boy and his dog. Female characters primarily serve supportive roles and are not depicted engaging in or winning close-quarters physical combat against male opponents.

The film introduces a new protagonist, a young boy named Sébastien, who is a new character in the 'next generation' storyline. The dog Belle remains female. No established characters from the original canon are portrayed with a different gender.
