The Adventures of Mark Twain poster

The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985)

Overview

Based on elements from the stories of Mark Twain, this feature-length Claymation fantasy follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher and Huck Finn as they stowaway aboard the interplanetary balloon of Mark Twain. Twain, disgusted with the human race, is intent upon finding Halley's Comet and crashing into it, achieving his "destiny." It's up to Tom, Becky, and Huck to convince him that his judgment is wrong and that he still has much to offer humanity that might make a difference. Their efforts aren't just charitable; if they fail, they will share Twain's fate. Along the way, they use a magical time portal to get a detailed overview of the Twain philosophy, observing the "historical" events that inspired his works.

Primary

The film's central thesis is a philosophical exploration of human nature, morality, and existence, drawing from Mark Twain's often cynical and existential works. While it contains critiques of societal hypocrisy and human folly, these are presented as universal observations rather than calls for specific political action or alignment with a particular ideological framework, leading to a neutral rating.

This animated film adheres to traditional casting for its historical and literary characters, without incorporating intentional race or gender swaps. The narrative explores Mark Twain's philosophical observations on human nature and society, without explicitly critiquing traditional identities or centering DEI themes.

Secondary

The film, through Mark Twain's satirical lens, consistently portrays Christian institutions and certain adherents as hypocritical, dogmatic, or foolish. It critiques the cruelty and irrationality often committed in the name of religion without offering significant counterbalancing positive portrayals.

The film "The Adventures of Mark Twain" does not feature any identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or themes. The narrative focuses on Mark Twain's literary works and philosophical ideas through the adventures of his iconic characters, without any depiction of queer identity or experiences.

The film "The Adventures of Mark Twain" does not feature any identifiable transsexual characters or themes. Its narrative focuses on Mark Twain's literary works and philosophical musings, with no elements related to transgender identity or experiences.

The film does not depict any female characters engaging in or winning direct physical combat against one or more male opponents. The narrative focuses on adventure and philosophical themes rather than physical confrontations.

The film adapts characters from Mark Twain's works and life, including Twain himself, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and biblical figures. All significant characters maintain their canonically or historically established genders.
