Official Competition (2021)

Overview

When a billionaire entrepreneur impulsively decides to create an iconic movie, he demands the best. Renowned filmmaker Lola Cuevas is recruited to mastermind this ambitious endeavour. Completing the all-star team are two actors with massive talent but even bigger egos: Hollywood heartthrob Félix Rivero and radical theatre actor Iván Torres. Both are legends, but not exactly best friends. Through a series of increasingly eccentric trials set by Lola, Félix and Iván must confront not only each other but also their own legacies. Who will be left when the cameras finally start rolling?

Detailed Bias Analysis

Center

Primary

The film is a sharp satire of the film industry, critiquing universal human flaws like ego and pretension rather than promoting a specific political ideology, thus landing it in the neutral category.

The movie features a cast that is traditional for its Spanish-Argentine production context, without explicit DEI-driven casting choices. Its narrative satirizes artistic ego and the film industry, critiquing individual character flaws rather than explicitly focusing on or critiquing traditional identities through a DEI lens.

Secondary

The film includes a gay character, Darío, whose sexuality is mentioned incidentally as part of his personal life. His identity is neither central to the plot nor a source of conflict or affirmation. The portrayal is matter-of-fact and avoids strong positive or negative arcs, resulting in a neutral net impact.

Official Competition is a satirical comedy about the filmmaking process, artistic integrity, and the clash of egos. The film does not feature any identifiable transsexual characters or themes, therefore, there is no portrayal to evaluate.

The movie does not contain any action or adventure elements.

Official Competition is an original film with characters created specifically for this production. There is no prior source material, historical record, or previous installment from which characters' genders could have been established and subsequently changed.
