Extreme Ghostbusters (1997)

Overview

Based on the blockbuster films, this action-packed animated series starts a decade after the original Ghostbusters saved New York City from ghosts, goblins and ghouls. All the guys have left town, except Egon, now teaching a Paranormal Studies class at the local university. But Zuul, the all-powerful demon, has awakened from hibernation to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting masses. Desperate to recruit a new team, Egon and the plucky Janine turn to four of his teenage students: Kylie, a genius with an encyclopedic knowledge of the occult; Eduardo, a hip slacker with a crush on Kylie; Garrett, a wheelchair-bound athlete with a hot temper; and Roland, a “gentle giant” mechanical whiz. It's only a matter of time before Egon, Janine, old pal Slimer and the “kids” band together to rid the city of the evildoers.

Detailed Bias Analysis

Analyzing...
Leans Progressive

Primary

The film focuses on apolitical themes of supernatural threats and scientific problem-solving. While featuring a diverse new team, its narrative does not explicitly promote or critique any specific political ideology, maintaining a neutral stance.

The series features a new, intentionally diverse team of Ghostbusters, including characters of various ethnicities and genders, significantly broadening the representation within the franchise. The narrative, however, focuses on action and character development without explicitly critiquing traditional identities or making DEI themes central to its storyline.

Secondary

Extreme Ghostbusters, an animated series from the late 1990s, does not include any identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or themes. The narrative focuses entirely on supernatural ghost-hunting adventures without addressing queer identity or experiences.

Extreme Ghostbusters, an animated television series, does not feature any identifiable transsexual characters or themes within its narrative. The show's content is solely focused on paranormal investigations and ghost-hunting adventures, with no relevant depictions.

The show primarily features the Ghostbusters team, including female character Kylie Griffin, engaging supernatural entities. Combat involves the use of specialized equipment like proton packs and ghost traps. There are no instances where a female character defeats one or more male opponents through direct physical combat, martial arts, or melee weapons, as victories are achieved via technological means against non-corporeal or supernaturally powered adversaries.

The series introduces a new team of Ghostbusters, including one female member (Kylie Griffin), alongside returning characters Egon Spengler and Janine Melnitz, who retain their original genders. The new characters are original creations for this iteration, not gender-swapped versions of established legacy characters.

Extreme Ghostbusters introduces a new, diverse team of Ghostbusters alongside returning characters Egon Spengler and Janine Melnitz. The new team members are original characters created for the show, not re-castings of established characters from prior installments. Therefore, no race swaps occurred.
